NASA shares photo of moonrise from ‘unique vantage point’ of space station

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) regularly captures stunning images of our universe that delight space enthusiasts. The US Space Agency’s social media accounts are a treasure trove for those who enjoy viewing educational videos and fascinating images that show the Earth and space. Now, in its recent post, the agency shared a photo of the moonrise from a “unique vantage point” on the International Space Station.

The photo was taken by NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, who has been aboard the International Space Station for about four months. The image shows a crescent-shaped moon rising above Earth’s atmosphere. The planet appears as ocean-blue water. “Layers of orange and black appear beneath the horizontal blue band that extends across the center of the image. The crescent is white and stands out against the blackness of space,” the U.S. government agency said in a description of the image.

See the image below:

Describing the scene, the astronaut said, “A crescent moon rises from the night clouds and appears to gaze toward the horizon, awaiting the approaching sunrise.”

In February, NASA shared a photo of the moon and Earth in one frame from the International Space Station. In the image, the moon is in a crescent phase and Earth appears blue with faint white clouds in its atmosphere. “Our moon is in its waning crescent phase, when most of the sunlight illuminates the far side — the side we can’t see directly from Earth. The waning crescent is the last phase before the lunar cycle repeats with a “new moon” phase, when it is completely obscured from Earth’s perspective,” NASA wrote when it shared the image.

They added: “As seen from the @ISS, the Moon appears partially illuminated in the upper center of the image. Earth appears blue with faint white clouds in the atmosphere extending from the lower left to upper right of the image. Black space surrounds the Moon.”
