Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt return in Devil Wears Prada sequel as Disney gets to work

A continuation on The devil wears Prada is reportedly in the works at Disney, with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt set to reprise their characters from the iconic 2006 film.

According to Puckwhich first reported the news, it follows Streep’s Miranda Priestley “at the end of her career, facing the decline of traditional magazine publishing.” Blunt, who played Miranda’s troubled assistant Emily Charlton, has risen to become an executive “at a Kering or LVMH-style luxury group,” with the kind of advertising budget Priestley needs to save her magazine.

The independent has contacted representatives for Streep and Blunt for comment.

Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman are also reportedly in talks to return.

It is unknown whether Anne Hathway will reprise her role as Andrea Sachs.

She sounded doubtful in an interview earlier this year. “I don’t think there will ever be a sequel to that story,” she said.

The devil wears Prada, based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger. The story follows Andrea as she finds a job at Priestly, the icy editor-in-chief of a major New York fashion magazine.

It is believed that the character of Priestly was at least partly inspired by Fashion editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, for whom Weisberger worked as a personal assistant.

The film was a box office success, grossing $326.7 million worldwide. Streep won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy.

Last year, Blunt and Hathaway reunited for Variety‘s Actors on Actors series and reflected on their time working with Streep.

Blunt said she couldn’t stop laughing while making the film because her character was “mostly so terrible” compared to Hathaway.

“We had a great time with that film,” Blunt said. “I don’t know if any of us knew it would become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week. It will be the film that changed my life.”

The cast reunited at the SAG Awards, with Streep, Hathaway and Blunt jointly presenting an award. Fans were blown away by the interaction, which included the cast quoting lines from the film.

Finerman previously spoke about the casting for the original film, explaining how it would have been nearly impossible for Streep not to play the iconic role.

“People thought we were crazy. I mean, people called me and said, ‘Are you crazy? She’s never been funny a day in her life,'” Finerman said in an episode of the Hollywood Gold podcast, referring to Streep.

“She was funny, and they were wrong. But this was clearly a different kind of role for her. “I think that was part of the fun of the unexpected.”
