Two college stars made their NBA Summer League debuts on Monday as reigning two-time Player of the Year Zach Edey and second-team All-American Kyle Filipowski took the court for the Memphis Grizzles and Utah Jazz, respectively, in a 97-95 overtime win.
Edey excelled on both ends, scoring 14 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and the game-winning tip-in on a missed free throw to tie the game at 90-90, a goal that caught the attention of Grizzlies star Ja Morant.
Edey was a force to be reckoned with on defense, when he put a block in a bucket at the other end.
He also showed some mobility as he ran across the field to score a transition ball after a GG Jackson dish.
And its size, understandably, posed a problem in the lower regions.
Edey received critical acclaim for his work.
Filipowski had a rough opening night, scoring no points (0-of-4 three-pointers) for 16 minutes and grabbing four rebounds. Some fans pointed out his poor performance (which should be taken with a grain of salt, considering it’s Day 1 of Summer League), while others pointed out bright spots.
Edey and the Grizzlies are back on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET against the Philadelphia 76ers. Utah plays the Oklahoma City Thunder at 9 p.m.
