New Hellblade 2 sales data offers a clearer picture of how it performed on Xbox Game Pass and the charts

Hellblade II was heralded as one of the big exclusives of 2024 when it released back in May, but overall sales numbers have been hard to come by since launch. Now, thanks to the latest sales data from Circana, we have a clearer picture of its performance.

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, Hellblade II ranked 37th in terms of total dollar sales for May 2024, placing it 21st among Xbox Series consoles. Hellblade II did not receive a physical release.

Notably, Hellblade II launched on Xbox Game Pass at launch, and that was borne out in the engagement data, where it ranked 12th on Xbox in terms of monthly active users. That puts it just behind Fallout 76 on the platform, but ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Apex Legends, and Forza Horizon 5.

Piscatella shared the sales information on X/Twitter, as Hellblade II’s performance kept it from appearing on any major charts. Xbox and Ninja Theory have shared little about Hellblade II’s sales since its initial release, leaving fans to speculate on Steam competitors and other data. Gamesindustry.biz publisher Chris Dring noted that it failed to crack the Top 100 on the European sales charts in what he described as a “brutal month” for game sales.

The sequel to Ninja Theory’s critically acclaimed action-adventure game Hellblade II was announced shortly after Xbox acquired the studio in 2018, and finally released earlier this year. It was described by Digital Foundry as a “defining moment in the evolution of real-time visuals,” and we wrote in our own review, “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II delivers a mesmerizing adventure packed with cinematic spectacle and narrative surprises that maintains an ascending sense of forward momentum while not wasting a second of its slender running time.”

Elsewhere, Ghost of Tsushima returned to number one thanks to its Steam release, while Call of Duty dominated the sales charts for both Xbox and PlayStation. Overall, it was a tough month for hardware spending though, with all three consoles seeing double-digit sales.

With Hellblade II now available, Xbox is looking ahead to the rest of 2024, with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Avowed scheduled as first-party releases. You can check out all the other biggest games of 2024 here.
