Danny Trejo Responds to Viral Video of July 4th Arguing

Even at 80, Danny Trejo is hard to keep down. But that’s exactly what one provocateur tried to do after a Fourth of July event in Los Angeles last week. A viral video shows the actor getting into a brawl after a water balloon was thrown at his head while he was in a convertible. Now, Trejo is explaining the situation further and expressing regret for his actions.

Speaking to TMZ, Danny Trejo said: “I’m so sad that I acted like this… I’m so sad that grown men have to throw water balloons to enjoy the day.” He clarified why he got out of the passenger seat and approached the crowd in the first place, adding: “I don’t think I would have gotten out of the car if someone hadn’t yelled, ‘It’s sour!’ That’s when I started panicking. As I got out of the car — boom! — a balloon hit me. Then I looked up and there was a man [one]. I went over [and said,] “What the hell is wrong with you?”

The video shows Danny Trejo being beaten down. A friend of Trejo’s who was also involved said he believes the incident was deliberately aimed at the actor, which wouldn’t really be that surprising if someone wanted to make the event about themselves.

But despite the unwanted attention, Danny Trejo remains strong, even taking a dig at the man’s ego. “They couldn’t hurt me. It was sad… I would be ashamed if I attacked an 80-year-old man and he was still talking and laughing.” Machete, don’t be difficult!

That Danny Trejo is 80 years old is still hard to fathom. But that hasn’t slowed him down for a moment, he’s even expressed interest in reprising Machete for the threequel Machete kills in spacewhich, judging by his quick movements during the July 4 event, he absolutely can still do.

We hate to see an event turn violent in any way, and it’s clear that Danny Trejo, whose troubled past is well-documented, feels the same way. It’s good that he owns up to how he reacted, and shows that he’s still a role model to many in the community.
