Hurricane Beryl, currently at the peak of a Category 2 storm, made landfall in the popular Mexican tourist destination of Tulum on Friday morning with winds of up to 109 mph (175 km/h) and a dangerous storm surge.

The National Hurricane Center predicts the region will experience life-threatening wind gusts, storm surge of up to six feet (2 meters) and up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rainfall.

“Do not hesitate, material possessions can be replaced,” the president wrote.

Hurricane Beryl has killed at least 10 people, Reuters reports. Two of the dead — the first in St George’s, Grenada and the second in Hanover, Jamaica — died after hurricane-force winds knocked trees onto their homes.

Hurricane Beryl devastated Jamaica on Wednesday, leaving 400,000 people without power and destroying buildings. Grenada was also left with “unimaginable” devastation after the storm passed on Monday, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said, with 98 percent of buildings damaged or destroyed.

Beryl weakens slightly to a strong Category 2 as hurricane approaches Mexico

Hurricane Beryl has weakened slightly to a strong Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (177 km/h) as the hurricane approaches Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

A hurricane must be moving at least 110 mph (180 km/h) to be considered a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale for hurricane winds, making it a major hurricane.

Despite its category, the National Hurricane Center has warned residents who will be affected to stay home as “life-threatening conditions” move across the Yucatan Peninsula today.

Hurricane-force winds, dangerous storm surges, and heavy rain are expected, as well as rip currents that could create life-threatening beach conditions across much of the Gulf Coast beginning today and into the weekend.
